Here is a piece written by a friend of mine who wishes to remain anonymous.
Why do the opposition parties keep asking residents in Hougang, Potong Pasir and now Aljunied to carry the burden of ensuring enough Opposition MPs in Parliament on behalf of all Singaporeans so that our voices will be heard in Parliament and all Government policies will be checked by Opposition MPs?
Before you vote, voters should check the quantity and quality of Opposition MPs' debates, speeches and opposing views against Government policies for the past 20 years (1991-2011) before they decide to rely on Opposition MPs for the next 5 years.
How many bills and legislation have Opposition MPs tabled for discussion in Parliament for debates and discussions over the past 52 years ?
Now the Opposition is asking residents in other GRCs to vote for them on that basis again!
But on what track record ?
Personally, I think NMP Walter Woon in his 1 term (5 years) as NMP has contributed more to Parliamentary debates and progress in Singapore than the Opposition MPs' in Parliament over the last 20 years.
Oppositions have the mandate from residents in Hougang and Potong Pasir to raise questions and speak up on residents' behalf in Parliament but how many questions have they raised in Parliament over the last 20 years?
Maybe we should have these Opposition candidates as NCMPs and NMPs for the next 5 years, if they are really able to speak up for us residents in Parliament, then we vote them in as MPs in the next GE.
Does that sound fair? Rather than ask us residents to risk the welfare of our estates for the next 5 years on Opposition candidates with no or such track record in Parliament?
