Minister Yeo's Message to the Young People of Singapore
Minister George Yeo has sent out a video message to the Young People of Singapore.
In it, he recounts a chat he had with an SMU Undergrad where he learnt of the frustrations of the youth. He said that he knows how many feel that the government is arrogant and high-handed.
He mentions that people are concerned about Education, Healthcare, Transportation, Housing and Foreigners in Singapore. He acknowledges how he has learnt much from young people and how they have influenced him.
He goes on to say he will be the voice of young people in Parliament and invites the young to drop him personal messages on Facebook.
He ends off by saying that whatever decision the young people make, he will respect.
The government is often accused of not listening to te people. This however is not the case with George Yeo. He is one of the few MPs who actually takes the time to listen and not only that, he takes the feedback he receives and does something about it.
The PAP were losing the online battle in devastating fashion early on in the campaign and even though now, I can't say that they're winning, at least they have recovered somewhat. Online sentiment is still very much swayed towards the opposition, but I feel the silent majority is starting to speak up and chime in.
Minister George Yeo, with this video has in fact demonstrated that he does listen and acts upon this feedback. As a result of the ever changing communication landscape, he has campaigned in a different way from before, has sought opinion on what the most pressing concerns for young Singaporeans are and what they feel are the weaknesses of the current administration. He expresses them clearly in the video.
As a Cabinet Minister, I feel that Minister Yeo will have much more influence on government policies than any opposition candidate if they are elected. As is quite evident, Minister Yeo listens and will speak up for the young. I don't buy all this George Yeo for President stuff. He is commited to serving the residents of Aljunied and that remains his primary focus right now. If at some point in the future, he feels that he should run for President, I personally believe he will be an awesome President. One with different views from the PAP and someone who will be able to provide a check and balance for them, from a different position.
